5 things to do in Polignano a Mare

The town with the famous beach, Polignano a Mare is perched on Puglia’s east coast half way between Bari and Ostuni. One of the region's most recognizable holiday destinations, it is a favourite with Italian tourists.

With stunning views, wonderful food and quiet winding streets to explore, there is plenty to see in the town. But to make things easier, here’s our pick of the top five things to do.

1. Cala Porto - Throw down a towel at the beach

The picture postcard beach at Polignano a Mare is the highlight of the town. Contained within a small cove, the vast limestone cliffs, deep caves and crystal clear water are watched over by a bold Roman bridge. Glorious year round, it is a must-see on your Puglian holiday.

2. Take it all in at Balconata sul Mare

This balcony is the best place to take in the beauty of the beach below. Tucked between the classical white houses that perch atop the cliffs, enjoy the view out to sea, or look inland at the splendour of Polignano’s Old Town.

3. Eat with a view at Grotta Palazzese

Located in a natural cave overlooking the sea, this is an exclusive dining experience that you won’t forget. The spectacular terrace can accommodate 150, but be sure to pre-book as it’s very popular. If you want to treat yourself, there’s also a hotel.

4. Catch the sunset and a cocktail at Mylo’

If you hadn’t realised already, Polignano a Mare is all about the views. Mylo’ is a bar and cafe with a fantastic rooftop setting. Get there an hour before sunset and sit back to enjoy the show with an Aperol Spritz in hand.

5. Take to the streets on a walking tour

The Old Town is beautiful and full of history and worth exploring with a guide. Polignano’s most famous son, Domenico Modugno (singer and writer of the song Volare) has a statue. Also of interest is the urban poetry of local celebrity ‘Guido Il Flaneur’, whose work adorns many of the town’s doors. Try this tour:
